this is the photo that was shoot without lighting and post processing. very nice decoration, but it looks very flat and boring in terms of lighting in the photo.

Go ahead to see what works are involved to make it look more interesting

to make the photo look more dramatic, I did add some lighting to the flower poles. But how could I add lighting to all 10 flower poles at the same time??? No, I didn’t add light to them all at the same time, instead, I set the camera on tripod and have my assistant Canly to hold the “off camera flash” to illuminate different parts at different exposures. During the post processing works, I overlap all 21 photos , “extract” different parts of each photo and “combine” them into one photo. Some buring, dodging and sharpening are done in post processing.

Canly, thanks for your great help !!! Without your great works, I ‘ll never get so many great photos for my clients.

IF YOU LIKE THIS PHOTO, DON’T FORGET TO LEAVE COMMENT BELOW AND SAY HI TO CANLY. THANK YOU.

What I learned this time — we really need to get out the safety and comfort zone sometimes, and take the risk, in order to get inspired. A very great experience for me !!!

for church, bethanie chapel, St. Margaret church – almost go there once every week during the peak season.

Shooting at the same location every week is a good and bad thing – you get very familiar with the places, but easily get bored at the same time. To avoid getting bored, I ‘ll try my best to get a few new and creative shots every time, if I can get 2-3 new shots on the day, then I am satisfied, and don’t have pressure at all for the rest of the day. 2-3 new shots may sound too less for you, but please remember, we may have over 20 weddings in a month during the peak season, that translates to creating 40-60 new shots in a month, it ’s pretty challenging in fact.

here are the 2-3 new shots in the wedding of vivian and vincent.

ceremony: bethanie chapel
reception: four seasons hotel hong kong

love love this shot !!!! with this camera position, I always scared that I would fall onto the bride one day (touch wood !!!). the wedding ceremony was at 1200pm, so the chapel was very bright with diffused light from all directions. One flash (just outside the top of the photo) was used to create the dramatic lighting of this portrait. The challenge here is to confine the light to the bride only

another off camera flash shot, flash was just outside the top right corner of the photo. To make it look like a window light from the top of the chapel, had to position the flash very very high. Also have to balance the color, size and direction of the light very carefully to make it look natural.

another fav of the day. Here is the corridor connecting four seasons and the podium of IFC. There is a big mirror with very beautiful pattern. I tried to challenge myself to shoot in front of the mirror, but without seeing my image in the mirror reflection.

I didn’t do any pregnancy session before (except for my wife Xandra) as I am not good at that and my time and schedule doesn’t allow me to spend time in this area. But when Ruby asked me to take some photos for her, I don’t have any hesitation and I am really happy to be her photographer. When I started as a freelance wedding photographer back in 2005, ruby was the first few customer whom confirmed booking with me (and we finally had the pre-wedding photo session in 2007) . Since then, we became good friend.

This photo session was done last month and guess what? The new baby will arrive on this coming Friday! God bless Ruby, Simon and their family.

makeup artist: KK Chan

I ‘d like to share some photo techniques I used in this session. Everyone loves to have sunlight in their photo session, but unfortunately, it doesn’t always happen. In that case, I may use flash to create the feel of sunlight in some of the photos. Look at the photo below, ruby was walking under a “beautiful sunset light”, but, in fact, the day was very cloudy (with little rain), and the color temperature had a blue cast. Two off-camera flashes were used to create the light, you can click the link below to see the detailed set up.

ruby and baby walking under “beautiful sunset light” – created by flashes

the truth was: it was a cloudy day.

thanks KK for taking this behind the scene shot for me

Here is the lighting diagram
two off camera flashes ‘re set up. One was put in a 28” softbox at camera right. Another one was put behind ruby at camera left. I intentionally put the second one very close to the edge of the photo so that we could see some flare from it. Both flashes ‘re CTO gelled to give the warm look

Most of the other photos ‘re shot at home.

knew KK for years, but didn’t know she is also good at drawing

I was enjoying the “holiday” in last few weeks and very lazy updating the blog.

with only a few photo sessions in august, I had more free time to clean up the photo editing and album backlogs. Apart from it, really enjoyed the extra time I had with shulin. We went to different playgroups (little gym, ballet junior …. …) or went to swimming everyday – this was such a wonderful time (you can see some photos and video on my facebook fans page) !!!!

Before writing this blog, I was packing my equipments to prepare the photo session tomorrow – the bar mitzvah party of hugo. This is the kick-off of the peak season and my schedule was fully packed before the Chinese new year. Hopefully, I can update the blog more frequently in this season … …

In this and the next few posts, I ‘d like to share some photo techniques that I frequently use

I love shooting in available light, especially on a wedding day. But I also use a lot of off-camera flash, especially during the portrait sessions.

Here is an example – the bar mitzvah portrait session for hugo I did early this month. This is one of my fav image of the day – I love his expression a lot. You may think we had wonderful sunset light in this shot … …but … …

click here to see how this photo was created.

but, in fact, the light was created by a large softbox held by Canly (as you can see in the 2nd photo). In the 3rd photo, the flash is off, and Hugo ‘s face was in shade actually. There was sunlight in the photo, but the sun was at the opposite side of the camera and it gave a rim light to hugo. The tricks here are , we have to control the power, the color and softness of the flash carefully, so that it can mix with the sun light well and make the light look natural.

After 1-2 min, a waiter walked across and I got the 1st shot below. I love it, better than a blank backdrop and it looked more interesting. After a few min., nothing interesting happened, my assistant Canly asked me “ What are you waiting for?” , “ waiting for something unexpected” I answered. the very second I said this, to my surprise, winnie finished changing wedding dress and walked across the backdrop — Wow, that ‘s how I managed to get second shot below.

So, do you think it is by anticipation or by luck to get this photo ??

take a look at the following slideshow, not only me, everyone cried … ….

after seeing the sentimental side of the wedding, the day was also full of fun and surprises.

roger prepared a surprise to vivian before the first dance, in roger ‘s introduction video, he said ” Hi everyone, I am roger, 26, I am a teacher …. …. and I don’t know dancing …. …” What surprised everyone was that roger prepared a hip hop dance performance for vivian. No one knew about it (OK, Ken and I knew a little bit, we got notified that roger is going to dance, but we didn’t know what kind of dance, and we didn’t have rehearsal neither).

Starting from knowing nothing about dancing, roger kept learning and practising for 6 months before the wedding day. How good was the dance? take a look at the following video (prepared by ken)

amazing, isn’t it? back to the photos, it was very challenging to capture the dance shots, it was dark (btw, who turned off the hotel spotlight ) and motion was fast. To capture the following shots, I had set up 3 off-camera flashs on the site – two on light stands and one (with a 8 degree grid) on a lighting stick held by Canly. Canly did a great job as she needed to keep aiming the flash to roger while he was moving around and had to adjusting the flash power at the the same time. Here are the resulting photos, I love them so much !!!!

We did a same day photo slideshow at night, my assistant Siu B helped me to create this slideshow.
I love this venue very much. I got some free time before the reception and took the beautiful shot of the venue. This is a kind of “multiple exposure” shots (with some Photoshop manipulation).
I used a off-camera flash to illuminate different parts (tables and flowers) on different exposures and merge it into one photo. You can see the shots of individual exposure here.

Going to church, I like the details of the dress in this shot.
We did some portrait in church before we left. I was trying a new concept. Esther helped me putting a flash above them to light up the veil. We only had 2-3 minutes to setup this shot, if we had more time, we could have adjusted the angle of the flash better and make the veil look nicer in shape.

After we ‘re arrived at the hotel, the weather outside was so hot that everyone stayed inside the room. So we took some portraits inside the room. This shot was taken inside the bathroom with all lights turned off. The lighting was done by one video light

Got excited !!!!
