virginia and daniel, one of my fav wedding last season.  Again, I shot alone on the day without 2nd photographer, which gave me more freedom of the day. Having said that, don’t get me wrong, even though I love working alone, every wedding is unique and some weddings definitely require 2nd photographer for handling all the formal shots requests.

My fav shot of the day. It’s a first dance photo, I always tell my clients that dance photos are the most difficult shots to take on a wedding day. Lighting is always very dim if not completely darkness, even there are spot lights at the venue, they are usually unpredictable in terms of ligh intensity, color, or how the hotel staff operates them.  What makes it even more difficult is that you can never stage or setup dancing shots (that means you can’t ask the couple to hold or do it again, anyway, I hate taking staged shots).

I like this shot, it has very good timing, composition, and lighting. There ‘re three layers ….. the bride and groom, the parents,and the DJ in the background. Virginia and Daniel ‘re positioned one third of the photos that showed their importance. And the three layers also allow you to flow the focus from the couple to their parents and then to the DJ. While virginia closed her eyes and enjoyed the moment with daniel, the way that the parents looked at them gives a sense of connection between them. At the same time, the DJ behind worked very hard and it helps completing the whole story of this photo.

I had taken three photos of this particular shots and this one stands out with the best capture of the moment.

In terms of lighting, three off camera flashes were used, their locations, power, color were all planned carefully beforehand. The one thing I don’t like is the light on parents is too strong, though it can be fixed easily in post possessing.

the lighting of the ceremony was very challenging. the ceremony was supposed to be started at 5:00, but  somehow it was delayed to 5:45 pm. light was dim and the whole venue was under the shadow of the hotel, which gave you  a very blue tone. What made it more challenging, the yellow venue flood lights were on and it gave us a mixed light to work with (blue available light with yellow tungsten flood light)

the photo session was perfect !!! We got plenty of sunlight the whole day and this is my first time to had photo taken at both Shek O and stanley military cemetery in one single day.

1st location: HKU
one of my fav of the day — there was a very strong sunlight coming from the window. the difficulty of this photo is that I need to position fiona under the sunlight very very precisely so that we can see her face and figure as well as the details of the veil under the sunlight. Of course, this photo could never work without fiona ’s beautiful face, do you agree?

I usually don’t go to the Beach  earlier than 3:00pm because the sunlight is too harsh for photo. However, as we needed to go the stanley military cemetery later, we didn’t have a choice. It was quite challenging for photo unde this light condition!!!

It was really a miracle being able to take a shot like this at the beach in the early afternoon !!!!!

Lucky that I was the only photographer for grace and bobby ’s wedding, no 2nd photographer, no video. By shooting alone and being unobtrusive, uninterrupted and staying focus, it was easier for me to take candid and natural shot like this.

As some of you may know (from my facebook fans page),  I took the wedding photos of noel last month.  It ’s my pleasure to be the photographer of  noel and bernard ’s wedding.

Noel is definitely one of the person that I really admired for in the wedding industry of hong kong . Not only because of her success in her wedding gown design business, but also her pleasant and nice character as well. the more I talk to her,  the more I understand why she is so successful.

OK, back to the photos, as Noel already had her wedding ceremony on another day, so the day was very flexible before the banquet at night. Hers  idea was  to take some good portraits of bernard and her in the afternoon, somewhere in Central (close to her studio) and inside peninsula hotel.  As I took numerous wedding photos in Central and peninsula before, it sounds easy, right? However, when I discussed with Noel about the idea, I had a very very strong feeling that I should do something more special, more unique and more personal for Noel, not just another set of central or peninsula wedding photos. During the meeting, I suddenly had the idea of taking the photo at her studio, and asked her if she had any photos taken before there. Surprisingly, she never had any good photo taken there, and we all love the ideas !!!!

let’s talk about the challenges I have. Before the wedding day, I already start think about the approach / direction, as a wedding gown designer, I shouldn’t miss any details of noel ’s wedding dress, the photos should be able to show the characteristics of all the dress. And as the studio is so meaningful, including  as many elements/features of the studio as possible in the photos is a key to me.

I feel so happy and relax now that I am going to have a break in next three weeks, no more photo shoot in next three weeks. finally, have time to relax, can spend more time with shulin (shulin is about to go to  school, and I ‘ll accompany her in the 1st two weeks ‘ school time, so exciting !!!! after that, she has to attend class on her own)

To my surprise, my schedule was fully packed in last three months, the number of weddings and pre-weddings reached a record high during that time. I never expect there ‘re so many bookings as it was a low season during this period of time because of the hot and rainy weather and oversea pre-wedding shoot is so popular nowadays.

I ‘d like to express my thanks to all the clients that love my photo style, love taking pre-wedding in hong kong, and their love of the summer heat !!!

After changing into a evening gown, venice walked into the ballroom from the changing room. To her surprise, “I have prepared a special desert for you” , said kenny. When the dish was uncovered, we saw shining light – it is a  set of diamond jewelry. Under the spot light, kenny helped her to put them on in front of all the guest.

shooting in school is getting more and more popular in recent months’ pre-wedding sessions. I have already been to different schools 4-5 times just in last two months.

But I never have a couple dressed in their school uniform. Kimmie and Leo are the first this time.

I never suggest wearing school uniform to my clients before, as I think it is not suitable for every client and the photos can look cheesy sometimes. I have seen lots of “school uniform pre-wedding photos” on internet that look awful, with wrong setup, wrong makeup, wrong pose … ….

So when I started the photo session of kimmie and leo, I have a little bit of worry, but that feeling was gone once I pressed the shutter. Why? look at the photos below, they just look like real students, and look so cute !!!!!! A big thumb up to them, not only they have prepared the school uniform, they also got school handbook, “perfect” badge as well. Also have to give a big thumb up to make up artist gracy, very very natural make up!!!!

We didn’t go to University of HK  on the day, instead we went to a student hostel in the Chinese University of HK . For the outdoor session, no stanley market, no shek O this time, we choose to go to the Ma On Shan Park. What about the night shoot? When we ‘re on our way to Central, we suddenly changed our plan and went to the Shatin Central park instead (OMG, I have never heard any other wedding photographers taking wedding photos there at night before)

I was worried before going to these three locations as I had never taken any pre-wedding photos there (and I don’t think  I ‘d suggest them to my clients). Guess what!!!!!  I  got lots of new shooting ideas and lots of new photos on that day. What I learned this time —  we really need to get out the safety and comfort zone sometimes, and take the risk, in order to get inspired. A very great experience for me !!!

enjoyed a lot to be the wedding photographer of ron and albert. such a nice and happy couple, no matter what happened … …

Just 5 min before the wedding ceremony to be started, they suddenly found that they left the wedding rings in hotel, and no way they could manage to get it back on time … ….

At that time, I was really worrying myself and thought they ‘re going to be very very upset and might start to blame others. Didn’t dare to say anything but keep silence (BTW, should I keep on shooting photos if they start arguing, look very upset … …  wedding photojournalism ??? )   To my surprise, just within 1 min, they smiled again and forgot about it completely, looked like nothing happened. If I don’t tell you this here, you would not notice at all in the photos below.

I was really impressed by this couple, even though I have been to uncounted number of weddings before. I couldn’t stop myself asking albert at night “How can you be such a happy guy?”

Wish I can have such a happy and nice couple in all my wedding works.

Recently I got an email from a bride, she said she got upset on the day because of all the hassles – not enough sleep, rushing schedule,  the arguing wedding party … … My respond is, from my experience, there is no perfect wedding, no matter how much you have prepared. And that ‘s all these “little surprises” that make your wedding memorable and unique.

I love the wedding of clara and thomas a lot. It ‘s so relaxing on the day, not only they separated the wedding into two days, but they are indeed very relaxing, nice, easy going couple.

Something really terrible happened on the day. They planned to have the wedding ceremony at 3:30 pm. Guess what? the celebrant didn’t show up before 3:45pm, and there ‘s no phone call, no message from her. To my surprise, Clara didn’t get upset at all, and she could still enjoy and have fun with her friends. I was really impressed. Happy couple is happy couple, nothing can stop them enjoying the day.

This is my 1st time to have wedding at the government LCSD wedding venue (there are six of them). What a  good idea, but I believe there is a lot can be done and improved by the government. We had the ceremony at the repulse bay beach, very very nice location, but all the facilities are very minimal (and raw, I can say), not up to a modern wedding venue standard. Not to mention, the restroom is very very far away … … Hope it can be improved in the future and don’t waste this beautiful scenic location.

After the birth of mui mui, these few days are very very tired. Not enough sleep, lots of home/baby tasks, non-stop photo editing … … Lucky that mui mui was born during the wedding low season (of course, it ’s planned), or I don’t know how to handle at all.

This is the e-session of janice and anson – the last assignment just before CNY. My 2nd time to have e-session in Macau. Is it a coincidence? Janice also prefers taking hotel indoor photos to outdoor locations, so, other than the 主教山小堂 Chapel on Penha Hill,  we didn’t go to any Macau scenic locations.

I referred this e-session as macau hotel tour because we had arranged to shoot in all the new hotels – four seasons, MGM, Venetian … …

our 3rd stop – the 主教山小堂 Chapel on Penha Hill. We arrived there at around 1700h, we thought it was closed at 1900, so we relaxed and the MUA did some make up for Janice again. As soon as we started shooting at 1725, security asked us to leave and the chapel was going to close at 1730. OMG …. ….. we only had 5 min to finish the following two shots …. ….

The Catholic Cathedral is not very popular for me, only have 4-5 weddings there every year.  Personally, I don’t like all these big catholic church, specifically, their arrangement on wedding day. All of them just look like a wedding factory (sorry about this term), 4-5 weddings a day, one after the other, crowed with all different groups of people,  time is always very tight and makes people nervous.

Have said that, all these catholic Churches are very beautiful, both outside and inside.  I shot the wedding of Valerie and Andrew at the Catholic Cathedral in last wedding season. Love this couple – always had smile on their face, especially Andrea, you could hear the big laughters from him (something like haha haha) throughout the whole day.

And Valerie had to wait inside the limo as there is no bridal room there … … Look at the way Valerie looking at the church, you can see how much she looked forward to her own wedding. Always love this kind of window reflection shot, the results are always unexpected !!!

I was very very impressed that when they finished the wedding ceremony, both of their parents came out on stage and gave the blessings to the newly wed. Very very touching !!!!
