learn how to escape from the heat for a photo session in summer
- e-session of christie and ronald

I should have updated this blog a few days ago, but I have to admit that I was a little bit lazy, and spent lots of time playing with shulin.

Recently, the temperature is so high that it becomes very difficult to have any photo session outdoor, so I must find some ways to deal with it. As promised, I ‘ll share some ideas with you that worked very well in my last engagement session of christie and ronald.

date: 25 July, 2008
makeup artist: Rainbow

suggestion No. 1: staying at home

at noon, the overhead sun is so hot to stay outside — why not stay at home, lie on the bed, (and turning on the air condition as high as you can !!!).
I had several e-sessions taken at home before, but this is the sweetest one I ever have

the heat must go on
- e-session of christina and johnny

Christina and Johnny planned to have this session in April, but Christina got her ankle hurt so we had to delay until last week.

date: 23 July, 2008
locations: Wetland park, big wave beach, the Peak

As it ’s getting more and more difficult to shoot outdoor in the summer, I started to understand why we need to have a studio, . Not only the heat, but also the overhead strong sunlight that makes your eyes uncomfortable. So, is Simon going to open a studio? … … never, I hate studio work, it ’s so boring, I like the excitement of walking around to look for new location and good light ….. …. if you ask me to work in a studio, I ‘d rather going back to an office and becoming a businessman again.

Having said that, any way to cope with the heat? OK, stay tuned, I ‘ll share with you a few ways (with examples) tomorrow !!!!!

simonthephoto 's facebook pageBTW, I opened a facebook page, please support me by becoming a fan of mine on facebook.

last location of the day - the peak. we first took a few "landscape" photos. Then I passed my Canon 1D to Johnny and let him play with Christina. The result is quite interesting. I used three flashes for lighting setup, anyone like to make some guess of the setup. You can put your guess in the comment section below … …

the hottest day this year
e-session of carmen and philip

when I read the newspaper this morning, I learned that yesterday, so far,  was the hottest day of this year, no wonder we felt so hot yesterday!!!! When we were at the Wetland Part in the afternoon, we just couldn’t stay outside. Finally, we only spent around 30 min outdoor, and still got completely wet !!!!

In the morning, our 1st location was the Mary Knoll school, not only my first time to be there, but also my first time to meet Philip. I learned from Carmen that he doesn’t like taking any photo. It was a little bit challenging at first, but he was such a great guy that loosen up very soon, in fact much better than I expected !!!! And he made a joke that the amount of photos I took for him yesterday was more than all he had in last 10 years !!!

Look forward to their wedding in Oct !!!

date: 21 July, 2008

Locations: Maryknoll convent School, Wetland Park, Pak Lai (unplanned location), Craigengower crickets club

make up artist: Katherine and Elaw Wong

after finished the session at Wetland Park, I suggest them to go to Pak Lai, one of the most beautiful Sun Set location in Hong Kong. The temperature was much lower at that time and we had a blast there !!!!

The groom got sunstroke -
e-session of karen and ben

it rained most of the time in last few weeks, several photo sessions ‘re postponed. When I talked to Ben last week, he told me that he would go ahead the photo session on last Monday (14 July) no matter it rained or not. What a great man !!! So what happened — instead of having a rainy day, we had the hottest and sunny photo session. It was so hot that Ben almost got sunstroke when we finish the first stop at the Wetland Park.

date: 14 July, 2008
locations: Wetland Park, Shek O, Club JJ’s of Grand Hyatt

my fav of the day. I found this red wall inside the visitor center.

look at Ben, he ’s not holding a mobile. He almost got a sunstroke after one hour outdoor shooting. He ’s holding an ice pack to cool himself down

e-session - katherine and andy

So happy to be the wedding photographer of Katherine and Andy. Since they had decided to have an engagement session, we tried to work out a day in last dec / jan, however, both of us ‘re so busy that we couldn’t find a day until after Chinese New Year, and that ’s why this shooting was done on the 4th day of Chinese New year.

Hi Kat and Andy, you ‘re my 1st client in the year of rat :-) and look forward to your wedding in Nov !!!

date: 10 Feb, 2007
locations: University of Hong Kong, Shek O and Central
Makeup artist: Polly of faces HK

I found that HKU is getting more and more popular for my clients. I had taken photos at this building several times, but I got a new idea this time. Instead of taking photo at the long staircase behind, I was attracted by the shadow and the texture of the ground. To make the shot even more interesting, I asked Kat to run towards Andy (or the light) to create a motion. This is one of my fav of the day.

engagement session - irene and peter

When I first met Irene and Peter, I thought they ‘re a quiet couple, but I was wrong. They ‘re so out going and ready for anything that ‘re new and exciting to them. They purposed to me that they ‘d like to take some photos on the Star Ferry — oh my goodness. if you follow my blog, you may notice that I seldom take photos at crowded locations, I just don’t get used to it.

date: 15 April, 2008
locations: Shing Mum Reservoir, Tai Tam Reservoir, Shek O, Star Ferry, IFC Mall, Legislative council
make up artist: Amy of Ballroom (TST)

at the pier — I used a very slow shutter to capture the motion of the passers-by. As I didn’t bring a tripod, I was lying on the ground with my camera to get a sharp picture

wow !!! on the star ferry, a very different experience for me

engagement session - vivian and km

This was a very exciting photo session — vivian and km brought me to some of the places that I never been to before, so you ‘re going to see some pre-wedding photos very different from what I ‘ve shown you before.

hand in hand, walked in the countryside under the warm sunlight … … what a beautiful day. sometime they whispered, sometime they played and laughed. Really enjoy following two lovers walking around.

Date: Dec 13, 07

yes, as there is a new place, let’s have a quiz and guess where the locations are — if you know the answer, please leave your guess in the comment section

When we arrived there, I found it quite difficult for photos at first. It ’s in the middle of the day, we had direct sunlight overhead, not many area in shade. Need to adapt a little to change the way I shoot

a fun e-session with candy and clifford

I had so much fun to shoot the engagement session of candy and clifford (this was done on 20 Nov 2007) . They are the kind of couple that I don’t need to give any guideline or instruction for shooting –they just never stop running, dancing, playing and laughing in front of my camera.

I am already looking forward to their wedding at clearwater bay in Nov 08 !!!!!!!

my 1st engagement session in 2008
- hai and minh from vietnam

2008 is going to be a very busy year, the outlook is very good with over 70 wedding, engagement and Bar Mitzvah shootings already booked.

Hai and Minh was the 1st engagement session I did in Jan. They are from Vietnam and they chose Hong Kong to take their engagement photos. So we just communicated through lots of emails and didn’t meet each other until 3 days before the shooting. The first second I met them in a cafe, oh my goodness, they ‘re such as a stylish and gorgeous couple that  I was so excited to be their photographer.

Thanks Nancy for helping me for the make up and hair style. If you ‘re looking for contemporary make-up service and fashion look, I highly recommend Nancy to you.

Wow !!!!

fiona and sing fung - E-session

When I first met Sing Fung, I knew that he didn’t like the idea of wedding photos at all. To make things even worse, when we had the shooting on early Oct, we didn’t finish it (we got some bad traffic, when we arrived at the beach, it was completely dark already ). So we had to arrange a 2nd shoot early Nov.

Having said that, he was wonderful !!! Whenever I showed the pic to them on the camera LCD, Fiona always said why he smiled better than her, and he did enjoy the shooting very much.

At the end of the shooting, I couldn’t stop myself giving a big hug to him.

My fav of the day. The color is so rich and we got a very quiet beach … …

stella and alex
e-session

As a wedding photographer, we always face very difficult lighting situations … …

I shot the engagement photos of Stella and Alex three weeks ago and I encountered a challenging situation. We planned to go to beach in the afternoon but we ‘re late in our schedule that we didn’t leave Central until 4:30 pm. I started to worry as we might not have enough light on the beach as sun set at 6:00pm.

Just before we left Central, we passed "the Candle Company" on Lyndhurst Terrace, and I thought we should get some candles and they might be useful on the beach. With those candles, I finally got one of my favorite photo of the day on the beach.

when we arrived at the beach, we only got 30 min of sunlight and the sky turned blue and dark very very fast. I asked them to light up the candle and take a rest. When most of the other people left, the beach started to become very quiet and it was very romantic indeed.
I liked the contrast of the warm candle light and the blue and cool sky

joey and harvey
- engagement session

the e-session of Joey and Harvey was shot early August. We had very unstable weather — hot, humid, and thunderstorm … … Having said that, they are a wonderful couple and the weather didn’t affect their mood at all.

This picture was taken at Shek O after dinner. We ‘re about to leave, but I saw a big wall and thought of trying something different there. I asked them to dance and used a flash to create the shadow on the wall.
having fun with creative light
