I was asked by a lot of other clients that, other than weddings, what other jobs will I take? I ‘d say over 95% of my job are all weddings related, I seldom do any portrait, company opening, birthday party, commercial, fashion, etc… … I just found them too boring for me.
So what about the last 5% ?
Bar mitzvah is definitely my favorite photo event, especially the celebration party!!!! These people just know how to party, there is always so much fun taking photo for them. And the party for Leo didn’t disappoint us, I took photo of his brother Enzo last year and felt so happy to see their family again.
theme of the night: Hollywood and Oscar event management: Berge Studio venue: JCC HK

OK, what went wrong?
Just the day before the e-session of ming and stanley, the weather forecast was very bad and I thought the session was going to be postponed … When I called stanley, "go ahead," he said !!! And finally, most of the shooting was done in rain. In the beginning, my assistant Siu B, held an umbrella for me. But it just slowed down my style of shooting, so finally we just went on and shoot under the rain.
So what went wrong next? I didn’t actually meet ming and stanley until about two weeks before the shooting. When I first met them, my impression was they ‘re quiet and didn’t talk too much, but I was wrong again !!!! They ‘re such such a crazy couple that they ‘re ready for anything in front of my camera !!
date: Aug 11, 2008 locations: Shek O, University of Science and Technology (UST)
I am a two cameras – photographer — usually carry one 5D & one 1D and use them at the same time. You guess which one survived from the rainy condition? Out of our expectation, the 1D was out of order in the middle of the day, water drops got into the viewfinder and I couldn’t use it any more. (Isn’t 1D a weatherproof camera?????) Had to sent to Canon for service later … … This was taken at the Shek O seaside.

I believe every wedding photographer ‘d love to capture some new images in every single wedding — so do I.
If you ‘re a frequent reader of this blog, you may expect me to give you surprise and post some new images in every wedding. However, the fact is — it is very difficult to do that. First, as a paid and professional wedding photographer, I have to provide very consistent work to my clients. They confirm me as their wedding photographer because they love the previous works I showed to them, so I can’t give them too much surprise just because I like to create some new images to please myself. Second, it can put too much pressure on myself if I always look for new images on a wedding day. Third, I have a lot of new concepts in my mind, however, in order to get this images, I may have to take risk of losing some important moments.
When I discussed it with Lawrence a few months ago, he felt the same and we came up the idea of 2nd shoot with each other, that is, we showed up in each other ’s wedding, but without the responsibility to deliver the photos. By doing that, not only can I try and learn some new technique in a real wedding, but also know what DOESN’T work as well.
I was so glad that Lawrence like the idea and I started 2nd shooting in two of his weddings in August. I had so much fun and it was such a unique experience for me.
I ‘d like to say a big thank you to Lawrence and his clients for their generosity of allowing me to "play" in these weddings and so look forward to lawrence 2nd shooting with me in Sept.

my fav of the day – arrival of the bride. the long shadow gives a 3 dimensional look to the shot, and it, together with the brightness, leads your eyes to the bride

after taking the above pic, I ran to the back to take this.

I am so excited to share the good news with you. The Artistic Guild of Wedding Photojournalist Association [AG]WPJA just announced their Q2 wedding photo contest last Saturday, when I read their web site, I couldn’t believe that I was ranked as the top 4th artistic wedding photojournalist in this contest !!! And I am the only photographer from Asia in the Top 10 !!!!

I had 3 photos ranked top 10 in the contest — 2nd and 3rd place in the "get ready" category and 10th place in "sense of place" category. Here are the winning photos
2nd place in the "get ready" category – you can click here to see the judges’ comment. this is from Winnie and Ivan ’s wedding on March 8 (sorry, I haven’t written up their wedding on the blog yet). I love the lighting of this photo so much — I had done a lot of modifications of the lights on site – the windows light, the room lights, the bed side lamps, the table lamps and off-camera flash … … judges ‘ comment "Outstanding light!"

3rd place in the "get ready" category – (judges’ comment here) – from mei-kee and söeren ’s wedding on Feb 8

10th place in the "sense of place/architecture" category (judges’ comment here) - from nina and james ’s wedding on jan 4

Finally, I ‘d like say thank you to the following persons
- thanks Winnie and Ivan, Nina and James, Mei-Kee and Söeren for inviting me to take photos of your beautiful weddings
- thanks my partner Ken, my assistant Vickie, Siu B for all their help in these weddings
- thanks my wife Xandra for giving so much support to me

I love taking photos in Central, I can easily find locations with good color, texture, and light. I had taken numerous pre-wedding sessions in Central, but this was the first time leading over 25 persons.
Both mei-kee and söeren came from Germany, now working in India and chose Hong Kong for their ceremony. It was the first time for most of their friends being in Hong Kong — when mei-kee decided to take some photos in Central in the morning, everyone was excited to follow us and have a walk altogether.
You may think it was very difficult to manage such a large group on the street, instead, they ‘re such a fabulous group that I had so much fun working with them.
date: 27 feb, 2008 ceremony and reception: the peninsula hotel, hong kong
Tips: In other to work with such a big group,
- you have to be very confident on what you ‘re doing
- plan ahead what you are going to do in next 30 sec
- give clear instructions, of course, you have to shout loudly
the big "group shot" — when I was taking this photo, all the passer-by around stopped and looked at me !!!
